sleeping: shutting out disturbing noises

Each baby is born with her own unique rhythms of quiet and active states, just as each family has its own patterns. Gradually, these patterns become synchronised though they can be quite disparate at the outset!

Some babies are able to adjust to repeated noise, and can shut it out and remain asleep. Seven-week old Emily is particularly robust during sleep and copes well with the intrusion of everyday noises. This means that her parents do not have take special steps to adjust Emily’s environment to enable her to settle to sleep soundly. Other babies may wake at the slightest of sounds and need comforting back to sleep.

How easily baby is aroused from sleep can help parents think about the arrangements they want to make for where they put baby to sleep.*

The Children's Project helps to show why babies and children behave the way they do, so that parents and carers will be better able to understand them and respond appropriately. More tips and information on interacting with your baby can be found in The Social Baby, The Social Toddler and 'BabyShapes' books.
